When a Simpson family member has been sentenced to imprisonment, why isn't there ever an extremely long sentcence given?

I sometimes wish for instance, that Marge's prison sentence was a hundred or thousand times the timespan when stated it would have made the situation sound more shocking and devastating.

Because a) things need to go back to normal at the end of the episode b) they never commit major crimes.
